Talking to Myself Will I See Again We Are Always Running for the Thrill of It Riverdale

If you thought the supernatural shenanigans of Riverdale's Season six showtime in the twisted boondocks of Rivervale were wild, you lot ain't seen nothing yet.Spoilers by this point, but as revealed in tonight's brand new episode, "Affiliate One Hundred And One: UNBELIEVABLE", Riverdale has gone full supernatural, equally Archie (KJ Apa) and Betty (Lili Reinhart) now have super-powers, and Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) has been possessed past the spirit of her ancestor, Abigail Flower.

And yes, this is all really happening.

"This is not an alternate reality," Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told Decider. "Nosotros like to say that Archie and Betty have been granted special gifts instead of superpowers. And we like to say that Abigail has been reincarnated in Cheryl, as opposed to possessed."

In the backwash of a flop left under Archie'due south bed past departing villain Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos), the town is sent into an uproar. Veronica (Camila Mendes) reacts by shockingly calling for an ultimately successful striking on Hiram (read on to notice out if he's really dead), and Toni (Vanessa Morgan) and Fangs (Drew Ray Tanner) find themselves thrust into a gang war with the vicious Ghoulies.

But the ultimate weirdness is saved for Archie, who is now super-strong and invulnerable, and Betty, who has the ability to see evil auras. Jughead, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have any special powers at the moment (he was besides caught in the explosion); only astringent, near-permanent hearing loss.

And in the midst of all this, Cheryl thinks she'south caused the gang's issues through a curse she bandage last season, merely to notice it was all part of a manipulation by Nana Rose Blossom (Barbara Wallace) to summon Cheryl's slain ancestor Abigail Blossom (likewise Petsch) and put her spirit into Cheryl's body.

…Which is, yous know, a lot. Even forRiverdale. To unpack it all, including some tantalizing teases for what's coming downwardly the road for Archie and Betty, Jughead, Kevin (Casey Cott), Abigail and Toni and Cheryl and Toni, read on.

Decider: Just to get correct into information technology, with this episode we're really in Riverdale now, Betty and Archie actually take superpowers, and Cheryl has actually been possessed? This is non another alternate universe, correct?

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa: This is not an alternating reality. We like to say that Archie and Betty have been granted special gifts instead of superpowers. And nosotros like to say that Abigail has been reincarnated in Cheryl, equally opposed to possessed. Just to not apply trigger words. I'one thousand kidding. Of form, you're admittedly right. Only nosotros're trying to go along information technology grounded.

At that place'south an exchange in the episode between Cheryl and Britta where Britta asks, "Do we believe in magic and curses at present?" and Cheryl answers something to the upshot of, "A new age of wonderment is upon the states." Is that the whole explanation of how we moved fully into a magic globe? Or is there more to unspool down the route?

It's funny, that little exchange with Britta, I'm so glad you picked up on that because that does sort of capture the vibe and the tone of this season, 100%, is this idea that the old ways of the quondam, sometime Riverdale, an ancient fourth dimension when magic and superstition ruled the land, has resurfaced. So aye, that's a shorthand version of it, but it's something that unravels through the season, i million percent.

And then what led to the decisions to give the different "gifts" that Archie and Betty, and presumably Bingo the superdog, take going forrad?

When we talked about this, we really wanted the gifts to speak to who the characters were. And you know, Archie has over the seasons, proven to be quite indestructible. Mauled past a conduct, survived, all these other things. And 1 of Archie'south hallmarks has always been how strong he is, and how formidable he is, and how fit and powerful he is. And then that felt correct. And canonically, with Betty, we've definitely established that Betty — in i episode, where she tin can look into a person'due south eyes and see their true soul, and run into if they're serial killers or not, and this idea of reading auras came out of that. It felt like it was something nosotros had played with our characters before. We tried to sort of excavate from their core, so that it didn't come out of nowhere.

And is Bingo going to go full on Krypto the Superdog, teaming upward with Archie? Or does he just have fast healing legs?

You mean is Bingo Wolverine, basically? Yeah, listen, I'g not going to say he's gonna become full Krypto, only I practice dearest Krypto, I'k not gonna deny it. But right now, let's say he'southward simply got accelerated healing. Let's say that.

Why don't we talk near Cheryl. Now that she's been taken over by Abigail, what can we potentially expect? Does she have a plan for the town, bold of the vengeance quality?

Yeah, absolutely. I mean, what'south interesting about that story is nosotros'll detect that Nana [Rose] has an agenda, which we'll larn nigh, and which is why she reincarnated Abigail. But Abigail is not one to be controlled, much like Cheryl. And she definitely will be out for blood, in regards to the descendants of the three villains who burned her at the stake: Archie, Betty, and Jughead. However, I would be remiss to say that she didn't accept another motivation as soon equally she crosses paths with Toni. She is reminded of the great love of her life, Thomasina, and sees an opportunity to reunite, in a time when 2 women tin can be together openly and lovingly, which was non necessarily the example when she and Thomasina roughshod in love many, many, centuries agone.

Particularly given in this episode Toni and Fangs have this Don Cheadle in Fe Man 2 moment where they're like, "We're together. We're bisexual. Allow's movement on." They're clearly together, and they're pretty strong, so I'm assuming Abigail is gonna throw a little wrench in those works?

Yeah, she volition. Very rare characters come to Riverdale and don't throw wrenches around. I will say, though, that there is a lot of messy, domestic drama coming with Toni, Fangs, and Kevin. I do feel similar there'southward a lot of messiness coming from that, that story is non quite done either.

I do want to inquire nearly Kevin in a second, but only to stick with Cheryl: assuming at some bespeak she'due south able to retake her body, and we're non with Abigail for the life of the series, what is she going to recall about Abigail going after Toni?

That's a very skilful question. Get-go of all, y'all're 100% correct, information technology is not going to exist all Abigail now. There's no manner we would do that with Cheryl. Cheryl is still the main thespian. And yes, she will be doing some clean up afterward Abigail runs rampant in Riverdale. That'southward a season long arc as well.

Jumping back to Kevin, he temporarily gives up on his Broadway dreams to accept care of infant Anthony… You said that it'due south going to get messy, but what should we potentially expect to see from him as a single Dad?

There is domestic drama with Toni and Fangs. In that location will exist some romance for Kevin. Let's say, both practiced and bad. You know, Kevin will brand some ill decisions as he oftentimes does. And he has given upwards on his Broadway dreams, but that doesn't mean that he won't be singing and dancing later in the season.

On the other cease of the spectrum, while Betty and Archie are dealing with these gifts, Jughead is dealing with some pretty serious hearing loss that, I believe, goes all the fashion back to i of the original versions of the pilot. And so why bring in this plotline now, half dozen seasons in, and what does this do to Jughead? And potentially his relationship with Tabitha going forward?

I'll be totally honest with you. I had forgotten that one of the early on ideas was that Jughead was deafened. Truly, until recently and people have started to remind me of it. Nosotros did want to play a piddling bit of some fallout of the explosion on some human, naturalistic level. That said, it'south only the start of Jughead'southward story. And it doesn't necessarily follow a straight, conventional unfolding from that. Lots of twists and turns are coming.

When Marking Consuelos left at the end of Season 5, you lot were pretty clear about leaving the door open for him so he could come dorsum at some bespeak. And in this episode we don't see the body. Then certainly in that location's a question of whether or not he's 100% dead… He is killed off screen. Veronica sees the picture, Hermosa is aroused. Merely what happened between the end of Season 5 and now that led to this decision? And is he 100% expressionless, or could he make a shocking return?

Well, what can I say! I would say he's more dead than about people on Riverdale are. And I do think that there was existent truth when we established terminal flavor that the only style Veronica's trip the light fantastic of death with her father could end is with one of them dying. And as much equally I love Mark, in that location was no way information technology was going to stop with Veronica'due south decease. So I will say that, yeah, Hiram is expressionless. That said, we love our dream sequences, we love our flashbacks, we dearest our twins on Riverdale. And so tin I say that nosotros'll never see Mark again? That would make me sad, and that would make, I think, Cami lamentable. Simply yeah, Hiram's kinda expressionless.

The bewilderment is that TBK kills, or kidnaps, Glen. Which seems to put to remainder the "Glen is TBK," theories, unless in that location's a Fight Club deal going on. Should nosotros be trying to effigy out whether TBK is someone we know on the prove? Or is he just a mysterious, merciless killer nether the mask who loves Betty?

Very skillful question. I'm going to reserve the right non to answer it.

Alright, fair enough! Allow'southward talk about Percival Pickens then. He makes a big entrance here. He seems very friendly at start, but we've been trained to be suspicious of businessmen on this evidence… And so what separates him from Hiram, or even other potentially evil businessmen we've seen on this prove in the by?

Hiram was a keen villain. He was a great mafia boss, gang lord. Then when we were talking most bringing in a new big bad, we definitely didn't want anyone who was swimming in those waters. And given that the flavour was more supernaturally tinged and on the fringes of that, we were thinking of him every bit more of a villain out of a Stephen King novel. Like Randall Flagg out of The Stand up, or like the proprietor of the store in Needful Things. Someone who had a very different tone and way of villainy from Hiram. So that nosotros weren't trying to fill those formidable shoes, which we probably would not accept been able to do.

Towards the end of the episode Betty and Archie really assert their commitment to each other in a scene, and yous also put out that tease on instagram of them looking at some sort of pregnancy exam. At this point, are you actually going the altitude with Betty and Archie? I know we've talked around this a couple of times, but they're in for this one episode; are they in for the duration of the season? Or a length of episodes?

What we realized is nosotros've definitely flirted with the idea of Betty and Archie, just we've never actually explored that super fully. And it feels like this is an opportunity to spend time with them, run into them as a couple, operation, or not operation over time. I will say that this will be the fullest exploration that we've ever done of Archie and Betty, 100%.

At that place'south obviously a lot of speculation about the end of the show, and I know there have been no official announcements, merely last time we talked you said it was wide open up in terms of endgame. So I'grand curious: are you any closer at this point to plotting out some sort of endgame for the show? Or is it however wide open up?

Wide open up. I think one of the great gifts nigh this season is that nosotros are exploring yet again a different genre, and I hope fans really respond to it. In that location's withal so many things to observe about these characters and we're nonetheless in the midst of writing and producing flavour 6. And things have just started, at that place's then much more to come up. So I remember in that location's still juice in the tank as far equally I'm concerned. As long as the show remains meaningful to people and people are invested in it, there's definitely gas in the tank.
